Coir - Wealth from Waste
Coir is 1 -2" of the outer husk of a coconut. Coconuts are the seeds of palm trees. Flowering on a monthly basis, with fruit taking one year to ripen, a typical palm tree has hanging fruit in every stage of maturity. A mature tree can produce 50100 coconuts per year. Coir is truly a renewable resource, without damaging effects on the environment.
Did you know the Royal Horticultural Society has mandated that 90% of it's growing media be peat free by 2010? The horticulture industry puts tremendous strains on our existing peat ecosystems. Peat lands are an important carbon sink for the earth. They act as watershed filters, provide a home to many rare flora and fauna, and their genetic material offers scientists a glimpse into the past.
